Plot Summary
Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) is a skilled thief who specialises in the art of extraction β stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state. His rare ability has made him a coveted player in the dangerous world of corporate espionage, but it has also cost him everything he loves. Cobb is offered a chance at redemption: instead of theft, he must perform inception β planting an idea in a target's mind.
Why It's a Masterpiece
Layered Narrative
Nolan constructs a story that operates on multiple levels simultaneously: reality, dream level 1, dream level 2, and the mysterious "Limbo." Keeping track of each layer is half the fun.
Hans Zimmer's Score
The thunderous brass of Time and the slowed-down version of Γdith Piaf's Non, je ne regrette rien are unforgettable. Zimmer's score is deeply embedded in the film's emotional core.
Practical Effects
The rotating corridor fight sequence was filmed practically, with a set that physically rotated. It remains one of cinema's greatest practical stunts.
The Ending
Does the top keep spinning? Nolan deliberately leaves it ambiguous β and that ambiguity is the point. The film challenges us to question our own perception of reality.
